Grade Calculation Formula
Grade % = (Correct Answers / Total Questions) × 100
For example, if you got 45 out of 50 questions correct: (45 / 50) × 100 = 90%
How Many Questions Can You Miss and Still Get Each Grade?
Quick reference for common test lengths. Each cell shows the maximum number of questions you can miss while still achieving that letter grade.
| Total Questions | A (93%+) | B (83%+) | C (73%+) | D (60%+) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 questions | miss ≤0 | miss ≤1 | miss ≤2 | miss ≤3 |
| 15 questions | miss ≤1 | miss ≤2 | miss ≤4 | miss ≤5 |
| 20 questions | miss ≤1 | miss ≤3 | miss ≤5 | miss ≤7 |
| 25 questions | miss ≤1 | miss ≤4 | miss ≤6 | miss ≤9 |
| 30 questions | miss ≤2 | miss ≤5 | miss ≤8 | miss ≤11 |
| 40 questions | miss ≤2 | miss ≤6 | miss ≤10 | miss ≤15 |
| 50 questions | miss ≤3 | miss ≤8 | miss ≤13 | miss ≤19 |
| 75 questions | miss ≤5 | miss ≤12 | miss ≤20 | miss ≤29 |
| 100 questions | miss ≤7 | miss ≤17 | miss ≤27 | miss ≤40 |
Values rounded down (you must score at least the minimum %). Exact cut-offs: A=93%, B=83%, C=73%, D=60%.
How to Calculate Final Grade with Weighted Assignments
Most courses use a weighted grading system where different assessments contribute different percentages to your final grade. To calculate your final grade:
Final Grade = Σ(Score × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights)
Example: College Course Breakdown
| Component | Weight | Your Score | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework / Participation | 20% | 85% | 17.0 |
| Midterm Exam | 30% | 76% | 22.8 |
| Final Exam | 50% | 88% | 44.0 |
| Final Grade | 100% | 83.8% = B |
What Grade Do I Need on My Final Exam?
Formula: Required Score = (Target − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
Example: You currently have 75% overall (before the final). The final is worth 40% and you need 70% to pass the course.
Required = (70 − 75 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (70 − 45) ÷ 0.40 = 62.5% on the final.
International Grading Systems Compared
Grading scales vary significantly by country. Here is how the US letter grade system maps to other major educational systems:
| % | US Letter | UK Class | Australia | Germany | France |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 90–100% | A / A+ | 1st Class | HD (85+) | 1 (sehr gut) | 16–20/20 |
| 80–89% | B+ | 2:1 | D (75–84) | 2 (gut) | 14–15/20 |
| 70–79% | B / B- | 2:2 | C (65–74) | 3 (befriedigend) | 12–13/20 |
| 60–69% | C | 3rd Class | P (50–64) | 4 (ausreichend) | 10–11/20 |
| 50–59% | D | Pass/Fail | P border | 5 (mangelhaft) | 7–9/20 |
| <50% | F | Fail | F (Fail) | 6 (ungenügend) | <7/20 |
Note: Exact boundaries vary by institution. German grades run 1 (best) to 6 (worst), opposite to the US system.
