To find what percent X is of Y, use the formula: Percent = (X / Y) × 100. This answers questions like "15 is what percent of 60?" — the answer is (15 / 60) × 100 = 25%. The number X is the "part" and Y is the "whole" or total.
This calculation appears when finding a score as a percentage (scored 42 out of 50 = 84%), calculating market share (sold 300 out of 1,200 units = 25%), or determining how much of a budget has been spent.
The result is also expressible as a fraction: 25% = 25/100 = 1/4. Both the percentage and the simplified fraction form are shown to build number sense.
Percent = (Part / Whole) × 100
